THE newly formed RACQ Community Response Team had its final training session in Killarney yesterday.

As part of the Queensland Government Disaster Recovery Operation, the group of 22 RACQ workers, now making up the CRT, underwent a series of training and practical learning initiatives in order to equip them with the skills to provide Queenslanders with assistance in times of disaster.

The RACQ CareFlight helicopter paid a visit to Killarney, giving workers realistic, hands-on experience while trained officials gave demonstrations.

RACQ communications manager Joe Fitzgerald said the team was established after a need was identified.

"In February, we recognised that people needed help with cyclone Yasi, so we put a team together then, and since that was so successful we decided to put a permanent team together," Mr Fitzgerald said.

Crew member Steve Irwin was among the many that attended the disaster zone of Yasi and said it was his time there that triggered his decision to join the CRT.
"I enjoyed the experience, helping people so it's good to be involved and to be able to give back to the community again," Mr Irwin said.

The crew will be available to assist in emergencies across the state from Brisbane to Weipa and everywhere in between.

Patrols have been providing road service across Queensland since 1925. All the Patrols and Teams of the fleet use this site, whether they are Staff or CSP Patrols.

The purpose of this site is to provide a medium whereby all patrols can communicate and provide information and feedback on those issues that effect us all. We believe that through this process, Patrols will gain an understanding and a mutual respect of the challenges facing us, and to bring us all together as one group. We provide this service free of charge.

2010 was milestone year for Patrols in that on 26 March 2010, the club celebrated 85 years of Roadside Assistance Patrols, which started in 1925.
